Strathy North Wind Energy

KHL were called in by Spencer ECA to assist in the clearance of standing mature crops at Strathy North Forest, Scotland.

Scope

Strathy North Forest is a remote and hostile worksite on the North Coast of Scotland, where large areas of trees had to be mulched down to ground level on deep, soft peat to enable the construction of the turbines, bases and access roads. The site and water-courses were closely monitored by SEPA and other agencies and the strictest environmental controls had to be adhered to at all times.

Challenges / Notes / Innovations

Deploying two forestry 440hp power-pack excavator mulchers on 1.6m wide LGP tracks, KHL was able to clear areas that were inaccessible to the larger 40ton Spencer excavators. Working 24 hour shifts and deploying a self-contained mobile workshop and other support equipment, KHL completed the works, without any environmental incidents or safety issues.
