EON Lockerbie Biomass

Working with Dick Brothers to remove large volumes of stumps from harvesting sites across Scotland, in order for them to be processed into biofuel for supply into Lockerbie Power Plant.

Scope

KHL supplied a specially-adapted 8×8 Ponsse Buffalo forwarder to carry out site clearance at numerous locations, including Clyde Windfarm, lifting and transporting excavated stumps to processing and loading areas.

Challenges / Notes / Innovations

Adapting a forwarder to carry tree stumps, whilst still maintaining the safety and engineering requirements of the original model, can be time-consuming and expensive. KHL worked closely with Dick Brothers and Ponsse UK to modify the machine, so that these requirements would be met, but still enabling the machine to work in arduous and difficult terrain.

On a harvesting site, stumps provide the stability and surface protection of the ground underneath, so removing them can present numerous challenges, such as soft ground and potential pollution by rainwater runoff.

KHL work closely with forest owners and Dick Brothers to develop safe and environmentally compliant techniques and despite a long contract duration, not a single safety or environmental incident occurred.

All worksites were closely supervised by SEPA and huge volumes of material were successfully delivered into the Dick Brothers processing facility for processing into biofuel.

A history of modifying and building machinery to work safely and efficiently, as well as providing a highly-skilled operator at the very top of his game, enabled KHL to supply a machine to the project, that exceeded all expectations of all those involved.
